Heat Exchanger failure – DC White were called in to investigate a calorifier (heat exchanger) in a cheese factory which had exploded during use. Fortunately there had been no injuries. The calorifier supplied hot water for cleaning dairy equipment but had exploded taking out the wall of the building in which it was sited. The unit had been recently checked and signed off by the licensing authorities.

Doug White assessed the unit on site, checking for evidence of corrosion, previous damage or repair. He became suspicious of the pressure release pipes and they were investigated in detail, showing that, although in a soft water area, they had furred up with calcareous deposits causing a pressure overload that lead to a massive failure of the unit.
“Although the unit was recently certified, I found that the pressure release system had failed, leading to a potentially fatal explosion”.
