Seismic Substantiation Service Case Study
DC White had successfully carried out numerous seismic substantiations. A tobacco dryer support structure we had designed and substantiated suffered an 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile, just two months after it had been constructed.
For about three minutes the 3 storey industrial dryer structure was subjected to the fifth strongest earthquake seen on records. The tobacco drier survived both the initial earthquake and aftershocks undamaged, though significant damage occurred across the rest of the plant and tremendous damage was seen in the surrounding countryside.

It is this damage to the country’s infrastructure that really affects how quickly they can recover from natural disasters. By ensuring products are fit for purpose, companies can ensure that their plant will be undamaged and fully operational to aid recovery. UK companies looking to break into new BRIC country export markets need to know how their equipment will react to an earthquake.
Nuclear power stations and petrochemical plants are natural targets for seismic substantiation but any safety critical component needs assessment. Through our knowledge of substantiating equipment and structures we are proud to be able to substantiate the seismic integrity of clients’ designs and ensure their reputation remains unshaken at times of tragedy.
