Life would be a lot easier for designers and engineers if we could remove, eliminate or demolish what exists already. The ability of a good designer or engineer is to produce designs that work with and compliment an existing design, not bulldoze the merits of our engineering heritage. DC White thrives on these challenges – such as this one, presented to us by Tyco Wormald.

Historic Project:

Designed in 1863 by William Barlow and with building commencing in 1866, St. Pancras station has long been a London landmark. When the platforms at St. Pancras station were extended to accommodate the arrival of Eurostar trains it meant the extension of the fire-fighting sprinkler system.

The existing sprinkler system is entwined with the historic steelwork of the old grade 1 listed station and the new section of the system would need to accommodate movement due to settlement without damaging the historic structure.

Scope of Work:

DC White was approached to handle this task following our recent work on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project. Our scope of work fell into four main areas:

St. Pancras Station Analysis of Sprinkler System for Tyco Wormald

– Identify the movements in the existing Barlow engine shed and new platform extensions associated with construction, long term ground movements, thermal movements and operating http://tuktukbistro.com/suhagra-online/ loadings.
– Prepare a series of databases identifying fire suppression system geometry and short and long-term movements.
– Establish the movements seen by each pipe section in absolute and relative to its adjoining pipes so that distortions can be identified.
– Where severe straining of the system is predicted, suggest possible arrangements of the piping to accommodate the movement.

Nuclear Solution:

DC White produced a model of the system detailing each pipe coupling, anchor, support, etc. and then modified a software routine that we normally use for the definition of nuclear power station piping systems, to interrogate the movements database to establish the straining of each pipe feature. This allowed us to systematically assess the whole system.

By having the ability to systematically interrogate each point of the fire suppression system, we could check that the alignment of pipework passing through existing historic beams would not result in damage to the beam in the event of movement.

Harmonious Result:

We are proud to say that we have provided a comprehensive review and analysis for this major project, which has ensured that modern developments work in harmony with a great piece of British engineering heritage.

So if you’re lucky enough to be travelling from St. Pancras International Station, please take a moment to http://tuktukbistro.com/suhagra-online/ look at the rather innocuous fire sprinklers and think of us!
