The results of the successive Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on a CAD model of the vessel showed excellent correlation with the NDT process, highlighting an area of high stress in the location of the existing crack.

The weld containing the crack was ground out and re-welded. The combined results of the NDT and FEA were presented to the customer along with a proposed regular inspection routine, which included hydro-testing and vessel modification. With the additional modifications and maintenance routine, the vessel could be returned to service.

The problem of ageing plant is widespread throughout the engineering industry, often large plant equipment has little or no history. Our experience with Safeplant™ allowed us to be on site within a few days of the initial enquiry. The project in its entirety was performed in house without the need to involve additional contractors, thus ensuring complete project control and reducing the non-operational reactor time.
